The ‘young blood’ that’s ready to bring young people back to the island.
Manifesto
Diversity, Equality, and Belonging
All islanders deserve a fair chance and will not be penalized if I have a seat. Ask me about this.
Education
Having been in education recently and a new model coming into play – there needs to be someone on the ground that speaks the same language as the students. Surveys aren’t enough. Creating a board of young people, (or utilising the one already there) to be in every conversation and decision is crucial to their future. On island higher education is popular and must be supported more for the students that plan to stay. Likewise, getting your kids, and my friends, back home from university is a top priority. Be that in regard to housing, cost of living, or travel.
Housing
Working in hospitality was not what I wanted to do full time. Yes, I love it, but I studied events and worked with celebrities before this. Coming back home left me with my only option being a job with staff accommodation. The island albeit beautiful and rich- is desperate and trying to hide it. Simple unit homes with basic amenities can still look pretty. Suitable for us young people, the rather ignored older folk, and anyone between.
I agree we need to put a charge on the derelict buildings, that includes states owned. Not only are they impractical and dangerous, but they’re an eyesore. I would like to explore the idea of a band system for landlords to follow surrounding the facilities offered and who they disallow (sharers, families, pets etc), and how these influence rent prices. As a result of this, a group of protections for landlords based on each band.
Cost of living
I do not believe GST is the way.” what do you know of Guernsey” was something I often asked when I met people in the UK and many of them mentioned the lack of GST and VAT. The backhanded beauty of there being 38 of us means that a lot of idea will hopefully be in the same room. Exploring the cannabis route and a recently proposed ’corporate tax system’ will be my way around before I even think of saying yes to GST. I see the ribbons.
There are many charities on the island that do incredible things for the people of the island, but they are getting increasingly overwhelmed. The States of Guernsey need to work closer with them to be closer to the people. Sharing resources with local charities doesn’t just cut costs but it keeps things clearer.
States Houses
A buzzword for many. One thing I will be working to implement is a programme for those who do not work that requires them to ’clock hours’ of community engagement. A street clean on some of the estates or tidying some beaches will make everybody feel better. Nobody wants to be the first one to do something new so let’s all do it together. Volunteering in the churches or charities gives you a reason in your day. Isolation has never proved and those isolating themselves are often overlooked and discarded.
Environment
Don’t you find it’s easier to breathe in Herm? That's the clean air and quilt of green surrounding you. Climate change is still an immense global issue that we especially face as a small island. Green land should be protected until it becomes an absolute last resort. We have plenty of brown sites that just need a bit of brainstorming to be reused – is that not the literal job?
I would love of get rid of cars entirely in an ideal world. In a real world, we do not need this many. A cap on the cars per household is something I would like to toy with. With the new age of E-bikes there’s no excuse of lack of cargo hold anymore.
How many beers on tap?
There are so many deputies with so little results. Working in hospitality I have learnt that the more beers you have on tap does not mean you will sell more beers- some don’t even sell at all. Less deputies until results are achieved, if we really need more then so be it. The bar is crowded.
Just a Kid
Being only twenty years old is both a blessing and a curse. I will be twenty-one when the polls come in. I post my breakfast online for my followers to see- isn't that transparency for you! Yes, I am only a baby, and my extensive life experience doesn’t quite match the political backgrounds of some- the job is to listen to the people and the islands. ’Leave a comment down below’ translates to ’let’s meet up for a coffee and tell me about it. I am aware that there is a lot that I don’t know but I will learn as I go much like everyone else. My fellow deputies can help me with any jargon that I can’t quite find in the books or scripts. I don’t like being told I can’t without a good reason as to why not. There is a lot I couldn’t fit onto the page such as travel, the older generations, Alderney, preservation of our heritage etc but I have highlighted what I have had most asked of me.
